Let's say you have
and you want to draw the geometric structure of the C with the Cl, Br, CH3 and CH2CH3 bonded to it. How do you know where to put each I'm orientation to each other? (For instance, which goes "out" at you and which goes back?

In general - you don't know, that's why it is better to use dashes and wedges, or Fisher projection.
