Magnetic hotplate stirrer for 2000ml RBF?
« on: February 25, 2014, 07:08:26 AM »
I've been searching the inter webs far and wide, looking for the best way for me to heat and stir a 2000ml round bottom flask.

I've found a stirrer called: KM 16.7D from the manufacturer CAT. however its quite pricy (850$)

Then i found these reaction blocks. As far as i can tell, one places the dbf in the reaction block, and then places the reaction block on a normal heat stirrer. But how good is this solution? Can you stir through the reaction block with a stir-bar? Is it possible to get that big blocks? the largest i found, was 500ml.

Maybe some of you knows an even better solution. I hope you can help me.

If the round bottom flask has a port available, you might consider lowering in a mechanical impeller, instead of relying on a magnetic stirring.  At 2 liters, you've gone up to a larger scale, almost reaching the level where chemical engineering knowledge is needed.  By the by, what reaction are you conducting at this scale?
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.
