Since the product has a five carbon chain, how can you link two ethane sand one methane?

1. ethane with Br2 ... CH3-CH2-Br
2. React it with Na and ethane .. CH3-CH2-CH2-CH3
3. KMnO4 and H2SO4 ... HOOC-CH2-CH2-COOH
4. SOCl2 . ClOC-CH2-CH2-COOH
5. CH3CuLi . CH3OC-CH2-CH2-COOH
Resulting in . CH3OC-CH2-CH2-COOH

now look at wiki

Good Luck :D
