    I am trying to remove the nucelus of wood cells (tree cells), to soften them up.  I know there is a chemical that does that, but it is lost.  If anyone knows a chemical treatment of wood that will do that, I will be really greatful.

   I am an artisan, and I need to do that to make my projects.

All I can tell you is that Pharmaceutical Industries produce active carbon by dry distillation: in a nutshell, they heat wood in absence of oxygen, so that N and O leave.
In the end, wood is lighter and softer.
