Nomenclature for halides
« on: June 09, 2014, 09:56:30 AM »
I know this seems boring to some people but it's quite important to me since it has influence on my grades for an exam.

How would you name this compound (IUPAC)?

I do not agree with my teacher's choice of name.

2,3-dibromo-1-phenylbutane or 2,3-dibromobutylbenzene?

or other?

And does anyone have a link to some IUPAC rules that could explain this?  Thanks!

ChemDraw says it is (2,3-dibromobutyl)benzene. See here for lots of info.

Thanks for the answer.

I would also say (2,3-dibromobutyl)benzene but I think maybe both names are correct.

Anyway I haven't been able to find any rules that discuss this directly.
