Density Unit Confusion
« on: June 25, 2014, 09:33:13 AM »
I'm a bit confused the the units of density.

density = mass / volume

mass = kg
volume = m3 = kL = 1000L

Therefore, shouldn't density = kg / m3 -> kg / kL -> g / L?

But when I look online it says that: density = kg / m3 = g / cm3 = g / mL

Can you give an example of where it says density = kg / m3 = g / cm3 = g / ml ? Does it actually give numerical values as well? Otherwise, I think this is just the fact that kg and g are measures of mass, and m3, cm3, and ml are measures of volume, just as pounds are a measure of mass; and in3 a measure of volume.

"density = kg / m3 = g / cm3 = g / mL"

Dimensionally correct.

But, as sjb pointed out, you shouldn't take this numerically.
