Oxidation of ethanol by hypochlorite
« on: August 01, 2014, 04:53:50 PM »
Hi!

I'm new to this forum and I would need an explanation of reaction with ethanol and hypochlorite (I dont know which yet? sodium hypochlorite or calcium hypochlorite?).

Let me just tell you that I would simply like to make acetaldehyde (ethanal). I think this is possible with using both, sodium and calcium hypochlorite, but I've found out that I would need a special catalyst to do this when using sodium hypochlorite, but I'm not sure if this is also true for calcium hypochlorite? So, I don't know if it would work with just mixing CaOCl2 and C2H6O? If it would work, is this reaction exothermic? Since ethanal has very low boiling point (around room temp.), I would probably need to condense it, using lab condenser... (how do I store it when I make it? I'm affraid that the pressure would build up inside the container because of its low boiling point.) Do I need to keep it in fridge?

And It would be nice if you would explained simplified, because I'm not chemist or chemistry student, I just found great interest in chemistry and it became my hobby, otherwise I'm mechatronic technician student.

If you want to know why I need ethanal, it's just because of making new chemicals from ones that I have (I love doing that), it's a challenge... And don't worry I'm aware of ethanals toxicity (it's carcinogen). Later I might use it for making some other new chemicals...

Thanks for your help and please sorry for my english.

Best regards, nightguy

And right here's the problem.  Sorry, but this isn't a cookbook chemistry website.  We want to help people learn, not just perform laboratory demonstrations for themselves.  We're going to ask you to at least trouble yourself to learn a little bit of organic chemistry theory.  Check out the Forum Rules, in red, at the top of each page.

Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

@nightguy: As a policy, we do not help people synthesize chemicals if we are not sure they are competent to implement the synthesis safely.
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
3. Forum Supports LaTex
