Acids soluble in petroleum ether
« on: August 14, 2014, 12:24:11 PM »
Are there any strongish acids that are soluble in petroleum ether? Thanks!

Don't know about pet ether, but TFA is miscible with hexanes.
When in doubt, avoid the Stille coupling.

Palmitic acid is said to be "sparingly soluble" in petroleum ether. Other saturated fatty acids should be similar. Beware this results from text search only...

If the original poster ever comes back, I'd like to start off by asking them in what sense they mean -- "strong acid" , and especially the "-ish" suffix.  If I assume they meany strong mineral acids, according to the Arrhenius definition: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acid-base_reaction#Arrhenius_definition then I'd ask them to explain how they expect that to work without water.  If they meant other definitions, they can be more explicit, and then this thread may be "Organic Chemistry Forum for Graduate Students and Professionals" worthy again.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

O yes, "strongish"... Palmitic acid may not qualify. Caprylic acid neither
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caprylic_acid
https://www.spectrumchemical.com/MSDS/TCI-O0027.pdf
the second link claims "freely soluble" in petroleum ether, wiki "soluble".
