Brown Camphor
« on: October 17, 2014, 02:05:29 PM »
Hello Fellow Chemists,

I have bought a small amount of 1,000ml Brown Camphor oil, I want to distill the oil to Safrole however i was told by the shop that  Safrole is a banned item and that the content of safrole is in broken form and can not be extracted, does anyone know what this means? what does broken form mean, and is there anyway of extracting the safrole from the oil.

The main components of this oil are methyl cinnamate, camphene, 1,8-cineole, a-pinene, b-pinene, eugenol, borneol, caryophyllene, terpinen-4-ol, piperitone, phellandrene, limonene, y-terpinene, p-cymene, terpinolene, furfural, camphor, linalool, geraniol, bornyl acetate, sabinene, and cinnamaldehyde.

I need the Safrole content for a long winded prodect involving many other oils.

PLEASE HELP  :o

Safrole is the following molecule:
C=CCc1ccc2OCOc2c1

It would not appear to be on the list of constituents you have.
I have no idea what broken form is.
Development Chemists do it on Scale, Research Chemists just do it!

The shop owner told me as follows the Oil is 101% Pure, Just we have done the further process of the Oil (Steam Distillation ) so that no one can't extract the Safrole as we Broke he Safrole by changing the temp Quickly from low to high and high to low....

But you can Enjoy all of its therapeutic properties...

I have no idea what he has done but im guessing i cant extract the safrole?.

You realize that bit of hyperbole makes anything quantitative he says suspect, right?

Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

From

In the United States, it was once widely used as a food additive in root beer, sassafras tea, and other common goods, but was banned by the FDA after its carcinogenicity in rats was discovered. Today, safrole is also banned for use in soap and perfumes by the International Fragrance Association.
