IUPAC Name of an ethanol attatched to a cyclohexane?
« on: June 09, 2013, 09:22:07 PM »
Hi, i am a little bit stumped. I have a cyclohexane and attatched to it is a ethyl but on the ethyl there is a hydroxide attached to it if you can picture it what would the name be? If not i've drawn it at this link and attatched a picture (i think).

https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1YrJW02_miyJ4LXq_APfkFBXKcYj47qsD2Y6Lzzf5jh4/edit

So far i've gotten: 2-ethylcyclohexanol, and ethanolcyclohexane but I don't think any of these are right
Please help i don't know what to do. Thanks!

What kind of a compound is this going to be (ie. what's the final suffix on the parent name?).  Start there.  The rest of the substituents and name will fall into line after that.

so its an alcohol, the ending will be 'ol' parent is propane and substitunt would be cyclohexane? If this is the case would i name it: 1- cyclohexanepropanol?

The second 1 is not necessary, because the other molecule with the 2 would be have different name.
