Hybridization given me sleepless nights

Hey I have a questions that has been bothering me for a while.
Why is XeO4 a sp3? I understand that you can count the bounds as the first bond being s then sp then sp^2 and then sp^3 = four sigma bonds.
But I really want to understand why this type of method doesn't work as they are using on this website
http://www.adichemistry.com/general/chemicalbond/vbt/hybridization-illustrations.html
And all the youtube tutorials are using this technique also but somehow it doesn't work for this compounds XeO4 and XeOF2
I would really appreciate for some help as this has give me some sleepless nights.
