Dehydration of zinc acetate hydrate
« on: January 01, 2015, 03:57:59 AM »
Is there any simple method for dehydrating the zinc acetate hydrate?

I want to get zinc acetate dehydrate Zn(OAc)2 from Zn(OAc)2.(H2O)2

No, you can't make anhydrous zinc acetate by simple heating/dehydration.
Zn(CH3COO)2 melts first at 242 °C, and then it gives Zn4O(CH3COO)6, and then it sublimes just like Be4O(CH3COO)6

An idea: you can try to find the phase diagram for Zn(OAc)22-water. Probably at a certain composition of an aqueous solution of zinc acetate you can crystallize anhydrous zinc acetate in a certain temperature interval...

If talking about ideas - treatment with acetic anhydride can work.
