Hello, I am currently trying to find more (english) information about I₂ on the internet.
The problem is I don't know how I₂ is called in english, I know "I" is iodine but what about "I₂" ?

In french we call "I" Iode and "I₂" Diiode but I can't find the equivalent word in english for "diiode"
How do english speakers make the difference between the two ?

Iodine exist as I₂, so there is no different name.

It is sometimes referred to as "elemental iodine" or "molecular iodine", but in English I₂ is normally just "iodine".

A problem you might have with your internet searches is that "iodine " is a term often used in nutritional literature to refer to "dietary iodine", which is usually in fact iodide.

And who decided the bizarre naming of "dioxygen", "dihydrogen" and more? The French school system? The French Wiki tells "diiode", the English and German don't, the Spanish only for unusual emphasis.

Because, well, trioxygen is uncommon enough that we can use a different word for it, say as well "atomic hydrogen" when its not diatomic - and keep the short name for the overwhelmingly predominant form.
