What's your definition of "very costly"? It would const me 2€/g (for 100 g) to buy. I don't think I'd bother making it myself.
BaCl
2
+ 2Acetylacetone
Ba(acac)
2
+ 2HCl will lie very far to the left - consider the pKa of acetylacetone compared to HCl.
I don't know how this compound is made, but if you think about pKa, you should be able to propose a Ba compound that should react with acetylacetone. Any ideas?

Not everybody has 200.- € to buy 100g.
I would take the Bareiumhydroxide or Carbonate.
