Nomenclature phenanthrene derivative
« on: October 09, 2015, 04:28:05 PM »
Hi everybody,

I'm struggling with the nomenclature of a particular compound 1-(phenanthren-3-yl)-ethanone. I don't understand the function of the "3-yl". Could someone please explain this?

Thanks in advance

I believe it means the phen group is attached to the ethanone at the 3 position (of the phen group).
