This is a bit of a theoretical question that I'm a bit confused about, but why is it that you have to use acidic ninhydrin specifically if you're trying to visual alkaline amino acid fractions in something like cation exchange chromatography?

On a similar note, why do you use neutral ninhydrin for non-alkaline fractions to visual the amino acid?
