2,4,6-Trinitroluene: What does the 2,4,6- at the start mean?
« on: April 24, 2006, 10:05:33 PM »
I am in grade nine working on a project about building molecules. I decided to choose TNT, or trinitroluene. Apparently the most common form of Trinitroluene is 2,4,6-Trinitroluene, yet I do not know what the 2,4,6 means and need to write about the chemical name. Is it possible anyone could spare some time to explain this to me, or at least give me a few hints?

This one names 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene in particular: http://www.dmacc.edu/instructors/rbwollaston/aromatic_rings2.htm

The 2, 4, and 6 refer to the positions of the nitro groups on trinitrotoluene.  The carbon on the ring to which the methyl group is atttatched is numbered 1.
