How to react aspirin with NaOH?
« on: January 14, 2016, 08:46:33 PM »
For my IB Chemistry class I have to design my own lab, and I decided to react aspirin with different alkalis in order to see what makes it the most soluble in water. For example, I will be reacting it with NaOH.
What form do I need to have the acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) in for this reaction? I am assuming I can't just use an acetylsalicylic acid tablet with NaOH. So is there a powder or a crystal or an aqueous form or something? Any insight would be extremely helpful!

You can grind the tablets, but its also available as powder. But careful if you consider to use high alcaline compounds. What type of compound is the Acetylsalicylic acid?
