Long Oil-Drying Alkyd Resin Formulations
« on: January 20, 2016, 02:11:02 PM »
Hello All,

Currently working on a long oil, drying oil, alkyd resin formulation.  I am having some difficult with the initial formulation.  In example, how much oil to use (fatty acids is not an option) to glycerol to catalyst, and then the addition of the pthalic anhydride.  I am completely lost  ??? Does anyone out there have any suggestions or good links to reads for the basic formula, where it is well explained?

Thanks to all

I'd try an azeotrpoic mixture: toluene is prolly your best choice, 2nd cyclohexane:lower temperature but lower azeotrope %.  Cyclohexane is ~30% at ~65-70C and toluene is 55% at 85C. either would dissolve well in your oil, so I think it will work.  Flocculation is possible if you got the right glassware
