Where can I find accurate information on pre/post-1982 pennies?
« on: February 12, 2016, 08:59:31 PM »
Hello,

Where can I find accurate mass and dimensional values for pre-1982 and post-1982 pennies? On wikia, it says 3.1 (pre-1982) and 2.5 (post-1982), but I take these values with a hint of skepticism despite my lab calculated values are very close to them. Can anyone here verify these wiki values with creditable source? Apparently, a post-lab question requires that I cite where I find the actual mass and dimension of these pennies.

Thanks!

Interesting dilemma that you're facing here.  To find a good citation for penny mass.  Did you try the US mint website?  You won't find a more authoritative source then that.

Hi Thank you for replying!

So, I was able to find post-1982 mass and dimensions on US Mint here: https://www.usmint.gov/mint_programs/circulatingCoins/?action=circPenny.
But, I'm not having any luck with pre-1982. Please help?

Try the Whitman Red Book (you can read the parts you need online, too). That's probably the most authoritative info you can find aside from the US Mint.

Hi, thank you for replying.

I have corresponded with my professor and it appears I shouldn't have to stress too much over the source. He says Wikipedia is fine as long as I cited properly.
