How can we say the product by viewing the precipitate obtained.
Can anyone list out the products(or compounds) with their colours .
For eg,
A colourless soln(aq) on adding water and on heating gave white ppt. This ppt when further reacts with NH4Cl and NH4OH in excess resulted in dissolution of some of ppt and a gelatinous ppt is obtained. What is the hydroxide formed in aq.soln??
Can anyone say how to approach these sums in an easier way???

Well, at first sight, I remember aluminium to form a gel-like precipitate when you add NH4Cl and NH4OH (pH 9, I think).
However, I don't think this to be consistent with what you say about a precipitate formed just by heating an aqueous solution.

Magnesium hydroxide looks pretty similar to Aluminuim hydroxide. It´s also a gelatinous ppt.
