In mass spectrometry, functional groups can cleave by alpha cleavage, beta cleavage etc.
In carbonyl compounds, the carbon next to the carbonyl carbon atom is called alpha, and the bond between the ipso and alpha carbonatom can be cleaved by alpha cleavage.
Alcohols has a different naming system, as the carbonatom attached directly to the hydroxyl group is called alpha.
In the litterature, there does not seem to be an agreement on what the cleavage of alcohols should be called. Some sources claim that cleavage of the bond between alpha and beta carbonatom is called alpha cleavage, other sources call it beta cleavage for the same reaction type.
Should it be called alpha or beta cleavage?
