Mechanism help
« on: May 09, 2016, 01:35:20 PM »
Hi all, can someone help me figure out how to start with a mechanism for this reaction? I'm at a loss of where to start. Does the OH attack the carbonyl first? Or does EtOH attack first?

The EtOH reacts first. Then the acid protonates either of the OH groups and intermolecular reaction takes place.

OP: Have you learned about intramolecular vs intermolecular reaction rates?

When in doubt, avoid the Stille coupling.
