What would Flerovium (Element 114) look most similar to?
« on: March 04, 2017, 05:16:02 PM »
Got this question on my Grade 11 Chem Test (Chemical Bonding, Matter, etc)

It was a multiple choice. These are the answers I remember:

Red yellowish gas
Black powdery solid
Clear crystal
Grey metal

One or two other answers but I forgot (Don't have the test back yet). I assume it was just testing our knowledge on similar properties. The properties in the answers are in reference to other chemicals (Ex. Black powdery solid - Lead).

What would the answer most likely be?

Just to add - I assumed Black powdery solid just because it was the closest element in it's group. But now from visually viewing the rest of the elements in Group 14, I would probably have written grey (ish) metal. What do you guys think?

What is the appearance of the closest element in its group?  Where is it relative to that element, and what effect would Flerovium's position have on its properties?  I'm leaning more towards your second suggestion.  But there's always room for a surprise.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

Nobody seen flerovium or its compounds for oneself. That flerovium is metallic is rather obvious. This is rather an IQ test.
