Hydrochloric Acid from Water and Chlorine

Ok, I actually have 2 questions.

1)Will the reaction between chlorine and water form HCl?

2)Is it safe to store Cl2 in a PETE bottle for a short amount of time?

I don't think so. I mean: you'd have low yields and a mixture of HCl and HClO.

According to what I've studied so far, the best way to produce HCl is to make H2(g) and chlorine react in the dark.

Hmm, I also have that option, but since it reacts explosivly, I doubt i could get some Hydrochloric Acid from it.

Any idea on how concentrated the HCl will be from chlorine and water?

I daresay this reaction is explosive only if carried out in the light or at temperature above 250°C.

Does the reaction even occurr in the absense of light?  I thought you need blue light for it to react.

This reaction can proceed without light using actiwe carbon in temperature over 200 C.
But  you can produce HCl in the reaction of concentrated H2SO4 with NaCl in the lab conditions easily.

Cl2 + H2O <---> HOCl + HCl

Why is light a big deal?

I see there is a LOT to learn about chemistry.

Look up chlorine water on google.  Chlorine dissolves in water to a certain extent.
