Solution dilution

Hi everyone,

Let's say I have a beaker of solution containing 600 mg/L of sulfate. If I took a soil that had soluble sulfate in it (let's say 300 mg/kg) and literally placed it in the beaker, what will happen to the final concentration of sulfate in the solution? Will the concentration increase from 600 mg/L? Let's assume there is no sulfate reduction occurring and/or adsorption processes occurring.

Adding a sample of an inert solid (that's what your assumptions says) with a soluble salt in it is no different from adding just the salt. Inert solid displaces some of the liquid, so the total volume goes up, but the volume of the solution doesn't change and the added sat dissolves.
