Preparative TLC guides?
« on: July 26, 2018, 01:05:05 PM »
I am advising a student who is trying to use preparative TLC to find a reaction product.  However, this is not a technique that I have ever done myself.  I would envision using mass spectrometry and possibly NMR to identify the spots.  Does anyone know of a good review article or book chapter that discusses the practical aspects of this technique, such as sample application for example?

Not Vodoo is a great source for these kinds of standard orgo "tricks" http://chem.chem.rochester.edu/~nvd/pages/how-to.php?page=run_prep_tlc

Their suggested size is a really large prep TLC, I've done it on a significantly smaller scale just fine. Those plates can be expensive to blow entire one on a first attempt.

I have done some prep.TLC but find that a regular silicacolumn is better. One important thing is to not apply to much on the TLC-plate.
