Resonance Formation of 4-(Dimethylamino)pyridinium
« on: October 01, 2018, 11:57:27 PM »
For an assignment, I am required to create 5 resonant forms of the molecule called, 4-(Dimethylamino)pyridinium, in which none of the resonance structures can have a negative charge and must only have 1 positive charge.

I have no idea how to even begin this question, so if anyone has tips as to how to start with this question, that'd be great!

Update: I was able to come up with 3 resonant forms, but I am now stuck as to what to do now.

If anyone can give me tips (without giving the answer away), please do so and I'll be extremely grateful!

Attached are the 3 forms I came up with and if they are not chemically possible, please let me know!

Can you involve the lone pair on the amino nitrogen?

Thanks for the tip!!

Attached below are all the ones I came up with (all 5).

Can someone just verify that these are all chemically possible, because I'm only like 90% sure these are correct lol
