I was doing exercises on organic chemistry, and one of them said something along the lines of, "This flavoring is a compound that comes from the anthranilic acid. To what functional group does it belong?"



The answer my book gives is ester. Could you guys please tell me why it couldn't be an amine?

As a derivative of anthranilic acid, this is an ester.
As a derivative of benzene, this is an ester and amine.

So, in order to say to what function group a compound belongs, one must know from which compound it comes?

Frankly, its just as much an amine as it is an ester. Its would be pretty crummy to get marked wrong on a test for calling it an amine or more specifically, an aniline.
