Benzaldehyde + Ni Raney
« on: October 27, 2019, 05:59:33 AM »
Hi , in an exercise I have benzaldehyde +Ni raney

I don't know the product  exactly...
I know that:

Ni raney can reduce benzene
Ni can reduce also ketones and aldehydes

Here I have a benzenic ring + an aldehyde group
Will Ni raney reduce both ??

Thanks!!

Raney nickel does not reduce any compound. It is a catalyst that may transfer hydrogen to organic molecules from elementary hydrogen or from hydrogen-rich compounds.
Which compounds may form during reduction depends on the reaction conditions.

Yes,was Ni +H2

An exercise says benzaldehyde + H2/Ni raney

I don't know if both benzilic ring reduction and carbonyl reduction happen

The pressure of H2 and temperature of reaction are very important parameters.

Do I need High temperature and pressure in order to reduce the benzylic ring?

If mild/moderate condition I'll reduce only the  C=O of aldehyde?

But with high temperature both benzylic ring (less reactive) and C=O group (more reactive)

Thanks!

~100°C is sufficient for reduction of phenyl ring.
