Hello,

My professor has provided me with some problems in which instructions are given to draw the Newman projection of a molecule down the 3-4 carbon bond.However, the molecule is unnumbered; we have to find the 3 and 4 carbon for ourselves. Do regular IUPAC naming rules apply, meaning that I should simply find the longest carbon chain and number appropriately? Or, is the case different when drawing Newman projections?

And how do you want to clearly indicate which chemical bond the projection concerns?

In absence of other information I don't see a reason not to use IUPAC.  Speaking more broadly, it is sometimes convenient to number a molecule in some other way than one would number it for nomenclature.
