Separation of A Mixture Confusion
« on: September 15, 2020, 01:13:11 PM »
My chemistry teacher is having us make a procedure to separate a solution of isopropyl alcohol, water, salt, sand, iron and lead filings. Each of the substances have been cut or ground into similarly sized particles. What I am confused is how to remove the salt from this mixture, then how to separate sand from the lead filings (I was left with these 2 substances together with my original procedure). I thought filtration would be effective in getting rid of the salt water, but my teacher pointed out the mixture of solids could still be wet. They also pointed out that salt has a tendency to stick to solids during evaporation, and I could not find how to separate salt from solids. I apologize if this does not make any sense. My teacher gave us this assignment with little to no context on how to separate a mixture.
