So I am reading a paper on acidified charcoal, but what exactly is it? Cant find any good info on this.
Is it something you buy as is, or do you make it / acidify it yourself?

If it is a scientific publication, usually the author explains exactly what he means by using a specific term. This term taken out of context is wildcard. Occasionally, the author may cite previous publications.
