Iodination question (basic question)
« on: May 06, 2021, 04:47:40 AM »
Hi everyone,
I recently attempted to perform a rate order reaction between iodine and formic acid - but the mixture did not decolourise, and I am struggling to understand why.
In addition, what would be a more appropriate acid to use for my experiment,(aside from non-generic ones like propanone) to show decolourisation and thus determine a rate order - would butanone (with HCL as catalyst) be appropriate?

Thankyou!

Are you trying to do an iodoform reaction? It doesn't work with formic acid.
Check up what kind of compounds the iodoform reaction works for.
(BTW, propanone and butanone are not acids.)
