Isoamyl acetate for ester test
« on: May 27, 2021, 10:55:24 AM »
For our lab, we're supposed to test our target product (isoamyl acetate) using the chemical tests that we have performed for its reactants, one of which is the ester test. We were told by our professor that when doing ester test to isoamyl acetate we should just add water. However, we aren't sure whether it supposed to yield a positive result (acidic odor) or a negative result (no acidic odor). Any thoughts?

Is your product an acid?

It is not an acid. it's an organic compound that is the ester formed from isoamyl alcohol and acetic acid.

Some acids are organic compounds.  That point aside, the fact that your desired product is an ester is the key issue.
