Basic question about Benzyl alcohol
« on: August 08, 2021, 05:47:02 PM »
Hi there! Im having troubles with this reaction, I just started with chemical reactions. I found out that Benzil alcohol can be obtained from cannizzaro reaction since that one is more used, its explained perfectly in some youtube videos and websites. This other is a Grignard reaction but i didnt find any other explanation, can someone explain this mechanism and whats going on with it?

P.D. I dont have much experience and knoledge in chemistry, its something that i would like to learn, i just started.

Benzyl alcohol can be made from phenyl magnesium bromide and formaldehyde, via a Grignard reaction.

The arrow that you drew from phenyl magnesium bromide is not very informative about which electron pair performs the attack.
