Net Ionic Equation
« on: October 23, 2006, 11:47:23 AM »
I completed an experiment where I did the following

1) added NaOH(s) to H2O
2) added NaOH(s) to diluted HCl
3) added NaOH(aq) to diluted HCl

Im asked to write net ionic equations for the reaction.

NaOH(s) + H2O(l) --> Na+ + OH- + H2O

I have done net ionic equations where the two reactants were not water so Im a bit confused as to what to do.

Well since the reactants aren't water, what are the reactants when you mix NaOH and HCl.  What ions would they form in solution?  What ions would react to create stable covalent structures?

NaOH(s) + H2O(l) --> Na+ + OH- + H2O

I have done net ionic equations where the two reactants were not water so Im a bit confused as to what to do.

NaOH(s) + H2O(l) --> Na+(aq) + OH-
