I was thinking of using FeCl3 or ZnCl2 instead of the traditional AlCl3, which is harder to obtain and I really don't want to apply for a laboratory licence. I can't find any papers regarding this nor anything on other internet forums.

Iron (III) chloride and bromide can certainly be used as Lewis acids in alkylation. Several examples can be quickly found from Google.

Alkylation is demanding, but for acylation Tin(IV)Cl can be used, I think also Indium-salts? I am not sure. AlCl3 is very powerful so its the No1. The reaction is not so often used because of the harsch conditions, If your molecule is sensitive its not practical. You can impress your colleagues with Friedels full, Charles Friedel.
