Seeking heads-up on how to make a paste out of glass frit
« on: December 18, 2023, 12:07:53 PM »
Hi. Hope I'm posting in the right forum.  I'm wanting to make at home a paste whose main ingredient is glass frit.  The issue is what binder could I use, that leaves very little residue after it evaporates away. It would be good if the paste was like a cream. The paste is to be heated up to a temperature at which the glass frit will melt.  Can anyone please point out what binders I might seek to use. Thank you.

EDIT: As to commecially available products regarding binders, I think this would do, but I'm trying to mix my own binder. https://www.empowermaterials.com/applications/glass-paste-sealing-glass-binders

I am guessing you could search using GOOGLE on

making paste using cmc

That is what I might try based on my experience in pottery
The cmc burns out when you fire the object that it is used on

Let us know if that worked

It would be good if someone wrote a book on "sacrificial binders". I think that is the subject area.
EDIT: Actually, when I think about it, I should be talking with enamelers, working in glass. Because my enquiry is probably better addressed by those with practical experience of mixing pastes with glass frit.

Binders I've seen mentioned are:
* Water
* gum Arabic
* gum tragacanth
* dextrin
* vee gum
* CMC
* Knox gelatin
