whenever i press it against paper it leaves a mark, last time i wasnt pressing it enough, this time its kind of like an actual pencil.

Definitely sounds like a lead/alloy of lead.

Can be actually difficult to just throw out, lead is toxic and disposing off can be in many ways regulated.

No, just because you played with it doesn't mean you got poisoned, it is more complicated than that.
