Have you tried ChatGPT? It is scary good on chemical synthesis, it can be wrong, but its scary. Very, very fast and often correct or half-corrct.

And you never know which.

Plus, it always delivers the answer in an authoritative way, as if it was 100% sure it is correct. Sadly, people buy it and trust these answers, which is dangerous especially when they don't know enough to be able to treat them in a critical way. Which is why I always warn students against using ChatGPT - way too often it does more harm than good to the learning process.

As a tool for finding hints and some general ideas it is occasionally useful. As a tool for getting solid answers it is not.

NO it is NOT.  It is utter s#*$ on chemical synthesis whilst sounding very authoritative.  Unless you know enough not to need to ask ChatGPT the question to begin with you never know what bits are correct and what bits it has made up.  It has no place in science and anyone who thinks it does is at best an inexperienced naïve fool and at worst a s#*$ stirring #$*%.

I was sent a proposed synthesis that had been generated by AI.  It sounded nice, but I was unable to see a carbon-carbon bond being formed, despite the fact that the product had one more carbon than the starting material.

ChatGPT can be extremely impressive and can also be completely wrong, so... this is problematic.

Sadly, you can be right, there is plenty of bots posting here - they reuse old posts to look convincing. Then, after a few days, they add signature with spammy links. I ban/delete them all the time.

I've found that perplexity.ai is much better at this, but still would hardly rely on it for anything important.
