product of elimination reaction
« on: October 21, 2004, 08:40:55 PM »
what would be the major product  of the following reation
2-methyl-1-butanol with H2SO4 and heat

i'm having trouble with understanding with what to look for in solving these type of eliminations especially with identifying the beta-carbon.

would the answer possibly be 2-methyl-1-butene?

Yep, that'd be the product I would expect.  You might see some 2-hexene from a carbocation rearrangement too though.
