Precentage by Mass
« on: April 24, 2007, 06:32:07 PM »
We're learning about moles, mole ratio, empirical, molecular formula stuff in class these days. I'm stuck on this question:

Calculate the percentage by mass of each element in Ammonium Sulphate (NH4)2SO4

Thank you. :)

use molar mass and divide part by whole

example: H2O

molar mass:
H: 1
O: 16
total: 1(2) + 16 = 18

% H = 1(2)/18 = 1/9 = .111 = 11.1%
% O = 16/18 = 8/9 = .889 = 88.9%
Total = 88.9 + 11.1 = 100% Yay!!!
