Bohr and Bohr-Rutherford Diagrams

Well we've been doin' Bohr and Bohr-Rutherford diagrams in class for a while now but our teacher still hasn't explained to us why the diagrams don't work for elements with the atomic number above 21. Why is this so? Why makes the elements with atomic number +21 react differently?

Availability of d orbitals.

I never understood the point of Bohr-Rutherford diagrams...

What are d orbitals?

And Bohr-Rutherford diagrams are useful to find out the combining capacity of an element. Useful and trying to find out the products of a reaction.
