Naming of aromatic hydrocarbon
« on: December 08, 2006, 10:31:44 PM »
My book talks about an aromatic compound 2-phenylbutane, but after I saw the structure, I felt confused. Isn't its name should be just butyl-benzene, which is an aromatic hydrocarbon?

Iupac name is butan-2-ylbenzene. However, this molecule is generally called 2-phenylbutane.

I think it's but-2-ylbenzene, or a more common name isobutylbenzene. I've rarely heard about the name 2-phenylbutane
