Removing excess Benzoyl Chloride
« on: December 23, 2006, 10:06:57 AM »
Hi friends...!

I proceeded for one reaction in which I had to protect the hydroxy group of p-Hydroxybenzaldehyde thro' acylation with Benzoyl Chloride getting Benzoyloxybenzaldehyde. For this I had to use excess (approx. 1.4 eq.) of Benzoyl chloride for complete acylation using acetone & K2CO3 (approx. 2 eq.).

Now, after the reaction completion, what should I do for removing this excess Benzoyl chloride ?   :o

Pls suggest me.. ::)

You can usually remove it by flash chromatography.  Benzoyl chloride is remarkably stable.  I've reisolated it after chromatography!

Hi,

Ever thought of using a scavenging resin? If you are going to use the reagent a lot it could be a good idea to get some in.

If not, a siliga plug should suffice or a flash column if your crude compound not sufficiently pure.
