Synthesis of Naphthazarin
« on: January 11, 2007, 08:50:21 PM »
I need a decent method for the synthesis of Naphthazarin? I've come across a one involving 1,5-dinitronapthtalene and oleum. But its very messy with a bad yield, so if yee have any ideas it would be a big help

First result:
Preparation of Naphthazarin (3)
A solution of dihydronaphthazarin (2) (1.01 g, 5.31 mmol) in 5M sodium hydroxide (500 cm3) was warmed for 2.5 h; the reaction being monitored by TLC. The mixture was cooled to 0 oC (by the addition of crushed ice), acidified with conc. hydrochloric acid and extracted with dichloromethane. Evaporation of the dried (MgSO4) extract and crystallisation of the residue from dichloromethane afforded naphthazarin (3) (0.68 g, 68 %) as dark-red crystals;

But really, the question is kind of vague. What do you want/need to start with?

Thanks I'll look up the availability of the starting material.
To answer your question I'm using the Naphthazarin as starting material in a series of reactions and all going well I'll need multi gram
amounts which would stretch my budget. The reaction I mentioned with oleum and 1,5-dinitronaphthalene was the cheapest and gave
a purer compound than Aldrich.
