Why the molecules absorbs energy?
« on: January 13, 2007, 01:02:19 PM »
Hello to all,

I would like to know, why the molecules absorbs energy from the radition and how this will occur?

with warm regards,
T.NAGESHWAR :)

When molecules absorb electromagnetic radiation, the energy from the photon excites the molecule to a higher energy state.  For example, absorption of an infrared photon will generally promote the molecule to a higher vibrational state and absorption of a UV/visible photon will generally promote an electron to a higher molecular orbital.

Hello Yggdrasil,
Thank you for your good responce.
can you explain clear?
I am once again requesting "Why the molecule absorbs" what i mean to say, how absorption phenomena occurring in the molecule and why the ground state electron gets excited to higher energy level?

Thank you
T.NAGESHWAR :)

It's just as he says, the photons are absorbed by the electrons orbiting the molecule.  Essentially the energy that made up the photon becomes part of the electron's energy, causing electron to orbit faster or at a higher level, or causing the molecule to break.

Hello Mr. Bakegaku,

Is the photons entering into the outermost orbital of the molecule?
If so, The photons are more energetic than the molecule.
am i right?

I am not sure whether photons have more energy or not but the point is that energy is transferred to the molecule.  This absorption of energy is important in many analytical applications such as X-ray crystallography.

I don't think I know the answer to your question...

IIRC X-ray crystallography is one of these methods where absorption is of no use, as it is based on diffraction.

Yes!  No absorbance in X-ray.  Absorbance is observed in IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy though.

No, they can happen in any state of matter: liquid, solid, or gas.

molecules absorb energy because the EMR is photons E=mc^2.these photons correspond to the difference of energy between 2 MO so the energy is absorbed and this is how we see colours when matter absorb energy in vis. region ,if in UV it is colorless if in IR vibration occurs of orbitals and if in X-ray or Gamma ray region excitation and ionization occurs as electrons are pulled off orbitals and so on.and this is how MUTATION occurs,a mutation is change in the genetic sequence of DNA due to absorption of UV causes excitation of bases and makes Thymine dimers and if bases absorb Gamma or X-ray they ionize and this leads to chemical change adn consequently leads to change in transcription and protein synthesis which appears as physical changes in the human or creature body.I hope u have underetood how EMR is absorbed and application on it.
