obtaining nitrogen gas
« on: January 17, 2007, 05:54:42 PM »
Does anyone know an easy way to obtain nitrogen gas from liquid nitrogen? Or where nitrogen gas can be purchased?

Also: can nitrogen gas be used when you're not in a lab or educational facility?

Um, is that question back words?

Did you mean can you make liquid nitrogen from nitrogen gas?
As liquid nitrogens boiling point is -320oC. If you have liquid nitrogen, just leaving it on the counter it will turn to gas.

And air is 78% nitrogen gas, you have all you need, heh.

No, its not backwards. Obtaining liquid nitrogen from nitrogen gas would be more expensive than getting the liquid nitrogen so really there's no point for me  to do that(considering that my experiment doesn't really focus on changing the states of nitrogen). Oh, and what I should of asked was is there a way to get nitrogen gas out of an enclosed space, cheaply and quickly?

Yes there are many ways of getting nitrogen out of air. I do not know if they are cheap and efficient on a small scale.

But nitrogen gas is very cheap, and can be bought readily. There is a large "down payment" as you pay for the tank, but when you either need a refill or a new tank and exchange the old empty tank, it is quite cheap.

But to make it yourself from air, look up the many ways of fractionation of air; and see if any apply to you. There are also of course, chemical reactions that produce nitrogen. But really, it is cheap to buy.
