IR emitting chemicals
« on: February 02, 2007, 07:18:02 AM »
Hi all,

I am having no luck with google so I turn to you all for help.

I am looking for chemicals which emit high levels of 1?m wavelength (around the IR spectrum) radiation upon combustion or any other form of required reaction.

Plenty of chemicals which radiate wavelengths in the visible spectrum are easily found e.g. phosphorous, but I am having no luck in finding an IR specific chemical.

Do chemicals like this exist or will I have to make do with hot burning chemicals as my source?

Solutions or pointers in the right direction are most appreciated!!!!

Cheers

Phil

What about hot piece of metal? You'll have to control its temperature to be sure most of the emission goes around 1?m.

I am sorry I totally forgot to say in the original post - I was after an instant burst of IR opposed to a constant source (my appologies for total lack of description).

The hope was to be able to produce a device which could produce a large amount of IR in an instant (I suppose it is similar to the old style of photography were they they use to use flash powder).

Sorry again for the lack of clarity.

Thin wire (wires)? It'll get hot very fast, it'll cool down very fast as well thanks to the very low heat capacity.

IR diodes (like the ones used in remote controllers) - no idea what's their wavelength and power, but you may try to approach problem from this side.

What about infrared lasers?

No idea about chemical ways.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I like the idea of the IR diodes, they hadn't even crossed my mind, but it looks like its got to be the IR laser as I think that will be the only one which can provide enough energy.

Shame, I had hoped there would be a nice cheap chemical which could be incased and triggered.

Cheers for all your *delete me*

Yes - Borek's IR laser idea has to be the best.   Very cheap if you use on of those laser pointer pens - you can turn it on and off as you please with the press of a button.   I got one in Spain for about £4.00.  Out of interest, what is this for anyway?
Tonight I’m going to party like it’s on sale for $19.99!
